Meditation is not complicated. There are no techniques, memorizations, or postures necessary to have a fruitful and joyful practice. There is no one way to meditate. There is no wrong way to meditate. This, for some, will be liberating. For others, intimidating. Aha, multiple truths coexist!
No matter how you feel about it, meditation has many proven benefits for the brain, the nervous system, and an overall sense of wellbeing. So let’s explore some of the ways people receive those benefits in our Introduction to Meditation workshop!
This workshop will be an introduction to Zen meditation in the style of Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh, integrating some mindfulness techniques from other traditions of Buddhism and secular mindfulness practices. We will learn about meditation postures, silent and guided sitting meditation, walking meditation, deep listening, and loving speech, and we will practice a little bit of each of them, because when it comes down to it: practice is the only teacher you need.
Everyone is welcome, beginners and seasoned practitioners alike. You do not need to know anything about meditation to attend this workshop (or to meditate, for that matter!).
You will need to bring a yoga mat or something soft to sit on. There are a limited number of chairs for those who prefer them. It is best to wear comfortable clothing that does not restrict your breathing in any way.
This workshop marks the beginning of a new sangha, or practice community, called Mindful Heart Hamilton. If you are excited to include meditation in your life, and want to share that practice with others, starting on June 1st, we will come together on Wednesday evenings from 7pm 9pm to support one another in the enjoyment of the present moment. All proceeds from this introductory workshop will be used to buy meditation cushions for the space, so that our community does not have to bring materials from home in the future.
Georgia Webber is a meditator, craniosacral therapist, and comics artist on a healing path of her own. She meditates with True Peace Toronto and Mindfulness Practice Community of Toronto; holds a 500 hour teacher trainig from Naada Yoga Montreal; studies Herbalism with John Redden, and Nonviolent Communication with Henry Wai. She trusts in experience as the first teacher of self, and seeks to facilitate, validate, and support each person in their personal discovery of health.
